Hessen-Darmstadt 1792-1795

INTRODUCTION
The Landgrafschaft Hessen-Darmstadt or in English the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt (I don't know why it loose the "n" in English !) was a State of the Holy Roman Empire (or for short HRE), ruled by a younger branch of the house of Hesse. Hesse-Darmstadt was formed in 1567 following the division of the Landgraviate of Hesse between the four sons at the death of Landgrave Philip I. The other parts became Hesse-Kassel, Hesse-Marburg and Hesse-Rheinfels.
Up to 1790, various lands were added or lost to the Landgrafschaft but in fact it grew in size through the years.
The capital of the landgraviate was in Darmstadt, from which it took its name. As a result of the Napoleonic wars, the landgraviate was elevated to the Grand Duchy of Hesse following the dissolution in 1806 of the Holy Roman Empire (HRE). It was just called "Hesse", because Hessen-Kassel was dissolved and became part of the Kingdom of Westphalia.
THE ARMY OF HESSE-DARMSTADT
The army was only small before the outbreak of the French Revolution. As already was the case in the American War of Independence, troops were hired out to Britain from 1793 onwards but also to the Austrians. As Hesse-Darmstadt had an obligation to deliver troops to the Holy Roman Empire, it at the start of the war of the FR delivered an infantry regiment.
